Extra-Curricular:  Musical Theater**, A Cappella, Jazz Combos, Chamber Groups, Madrigals

**Musical Theater: It is recommended that all students interested in musical theater take a “Triple Threat” track of classes: Choir I or Choir II, Theater I, and Dance I for P.E. Credit. Musical theater performance is the study of all 3 of these disciplines. Please consult with your AHS Counselor on how to make this work in your schedule. Wind Ensemble I (Entry-Level and recommended for Freshmen.)
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

This course is open to all interested students and highly recommended for all incoming freshmen who play a wind or percussion instrument. In this course, students will learn basic theory/musicianship skills, 12 major/minor scales, and basic ensemble techniques. This ensemble studies and performs intermediate level high school band literature. Occasional after-school performances are mandatory.

Wind Ensemble II (Intermediate Level)
Prerequisite: Audition
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

This course is open to select wind and percussion students by audition. The group studies and performs intermediate through advanced high school band literature. Students are tested on performance repertoire and all Major/Minor scales. Occasional after-school performances are mandatory.

Wind Ensemble II Honors (Advanced)
Prerequisite: Audition
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

This course is open to select wind and percussion students by audition. The group performs a wide variety of intermediate to advanced repertoire and moves at a very fast pace. All Major/Minor scales are tested along with performance repertoire. Occasional after-school and weekend performances are mandatory. This class offers students a 5-point A grade.

Marching Band
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS P.E. Elective

This course is open to all interested students and highly recommended for all incoming freshmen who play a wind or percussion instrument. This class performs a wide variety of music for school events and wind ensemble concerts. The band participates at all home football games, select away games and some home basketball games. The group also performs at one parade and one halftime show per year. In addition to a large selection of music, students will learn basic marching steps and routines. Students may join this class without an audition or audition to participate in Marching Band during the Wind Ensemble II class. After school performances and rehearsals are mandatory.

Orchestra I  (Entry Level, Recommended for all Freshmen.)
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

This course is open to all interested string students. This class is designed to develop proficiency for orchestral musicians. The class will study concert literature for string ensemble and full orchestra. After-school and/or weekend rehearsals and performances are sometimes required.

Orchestra II  (Advanced)
Prerequisite: Audition
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

This course is open to select string students and guitar/keyboard instrumentalists by audition. Students must prepare a concerto on their respective instruments for the audition. The class is designed to develop proficiency for advanced orchestral musicians. The class will study intermediate to advanced concert literature for string ensemble and full orchestra. After-school performances are mandatory.

Choir I  (Entry Level, Highly Recommended for all Freshmen.)
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

This course is a choral class that teaches fundamental vocal technique and various musical styles. Along with classical repertoire, students in this class will perform select popular pieces, Broadway selections, and small-group a cappella arrangements. The choir studies and performs Unison, 2 Part, and SSA Vocal literature. The main objective of this group is performance (For school and community) which aims to develop student pose and self-esteem, as well as skill. Vocalization techniques, experience with various composers and musical styles, ear training and sight singing will be included in this class.

Choir II   (Advanced / Recommended for grades 10-12.)
Prerequisite: Audition
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

This advanced choral class requires a proper balance of voices (SATB or SSAA). Advanced theory and musicianship will be taught through musical literature. Festivals and workshops occur several times during the year; attendance is mandatory. The choir will study and perform several major works throughout the year.

Jazz B (Entry Level Jazz, Recommended for all Freshmen.)
Prerequisite: Audition
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

Students are expected to take marching band or wind ensemble in conjunction with this course. This course is open to select wind and percussion students by audition. This group will study beginning to advanced improvisation techniques along with a wide variety of Jazz styles ranging from swing, bebop, progressive, latin, and funk/rock. Playing in a Jazz combo during this course is highly encouraged. Occasional after-school performances and weekend performances are mandatory.

Jazz A (Intermediate to Advanced Leveled Jazz)
Prerequisite: Audition
Year-Long Course • Grades 9-10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

Students are highly encouraged to take marching band or wind ensemble in conjunction with this course. Combo playing experience in conjunction with this class is also highly recommended. This group will study advanced improvisation techniques and a wide variety of Jazz styles ranging from swing, bebop, progressive, Latin, and funk/rock. After school rehearsals and performances are required. Occasional after-school and weekend performances are mandatory.

Studio Jazz  (Advanced to Collegiate Leveled Repertoire)
Prerequisite: Audition
Year-Long Course • Grades 10-11-12
Fulfills HS Visual/Perf. Arts or General Elective

Students are highly encouraged to take marching band or wind ensemble in conjunction with this course. Combo playing experience in conjunction with this class is also highly recommended. This group will study advanced improvisation techniques and a wide variety of Jazz styles ranging from swing, bebop, progressive, Latin, and funk/rock. After school rehearsals and performances are required. Occasional after-school and weekend performances are mandatory.  For students who are interested in applying to: (1) an academic university with a music audition, (2)  a university with an art supplement application, or (3) a conservatory to major in music, it is highly recommended to also take a classical course that deals with music fundamentals taught in Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra or Choir.

EXTRA CURRICULAR MUSIC OPTIONS:

A Capella Club
Extra-Curricular Activity
A Cappella is a mixed-voice vocal group that performs a cappella arrangements of pop/rock music.  Our A Cappella group currently meets Tuesdays at lunch.  All students are welcome to join this club, and taking Choir I or Choir II with this activity is highly recommended.

Madrigals
Extra-Curricular Activity
This is an advanced A Cappella group.  Students in this class meet 2 times a week at lunch time to sing traditional Madrigals. The group will often perform on AHS Concerts and sometimes perform in the community at various events.  Students are selected for Madrigals based off previous voice experience, and they must be enrolled in a music class.

Jazz Combos
Extra-Curricular Activity
Semester-Long Schedule, Meets after school hours.
Highly Recommended for the development of Jazz soloing/arranging.

The AHS Jazz combos are open to students who are members of the music program. They are directed by Dave Robaire, a graduate of the AHS music program who is now a member of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute Combo in residence at UCLA. Students are grouped in combos based off their level of Wind/Jazz Ensemble along with Mr. Bloom & Mr. Hackett’s  recommendations.
