Agoura High Music to Perform @ Swing Central Jazz Festival

The Agoura High School Music program is pleased to announce that both the Studio Jazz & Jazz “A” ensembles have been selected to perform at “Swing Central Jazz” in Savannah, GA. This marks the third year in a row that both the AHS Studio Jazz & Jazz “A” ensembles have been selected to attend this national event for public high schools. Since the festival’s creation in 2008, Agoura High has attended each year.

Swing Central Jazz is a three-day workshop and competition with a collective approach to big band jazz instruction. Led by pianist/composer/educator Marcus Roberts, the clinician team includes a wide range of jazz educators such as Wycliffe Gordon, Jason Marsalis, Jim Ketch (Associate Director), Rodney Whitaker and Ron Westray.

As part of the competition portion of the festival, each group in attendance will prepare three required big band charts: “Invitation” by Bronislaw Kaper, “Don’t Get Sassy” by Thad Jones, and “Whirlybird” arranged by Neal Hefti for the Count Basie Orchestra. One of this year’s featured pieces, “Invitation” was arranged by trumpeter/composer and member of Jazz @ Lincoln Center, Marcus Printup. Each group at the festival will compete for the Bob & Jean Faircloth Award and a check for $5,000.

In addition to the workshop and competition, the AHS bands and 10 other high schools from across the country will perform in the historic streets of Savannah, GA. featuring big bands and Jazz combos performing with guest mentors from the festival.

The selected Jazz Ensembles will be performing at the AHS Annual Winter Jazz Concert on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, 7pm @ the Agoura High Performing Arts & Education Center – located at 28545 W. Driver Ave., Agoura Hills, CA. 91301.
